New Local Art Series by Anthony Lewellen Up Through 3/14
January 30, 2017
Our January 24 ‘Whiskey and Art’ event featured the unveiling of a new series by Anthony Lewellen, a Chicago-based multidisciplinary art maker.
In his formative years, he was an innovative figure within Chicago’s graffiti culture and is still active to this day. Early on he made a name for himself in the Midwest and beyond hallmarked by street work that featured a simple bold palette and emotionally complex characters born out of direct observation and digestion of life in the city. These experiences continue to inform his work today. Highly active in the studio as well Lewellen’s work is always building upon a highly personalized visual vocabulary that is rooted in a love of drawing and experimentation that continues to evolve and grow. His time pretty well divided between personal studio work, large-scale public work, and private mural commissions.
For this edition of ‘Whiskey & Art,’ Anthony created a series called ‘Color and Form,’ which is an exposition and distillation of reoccurring forms and colors that continued to organically emerge in Lewellen’s work over the last three years. In particular, this series is hallmarked by a departure from much of the stylized representation that often appears in his work.
All pieces will be available for sale at the brewery through March 13, 2017.
